What is 3-MMC?

3-MMC (also known as ‘Poes’, ‘ Miauw’, or ‘3m ‘) is usually sold as a crystalline white powder. It is also available in the form of pellets (pills) or crystals. The drug has been on the market since 2012. This is a very short period, which is why the drug is sometimes referred to as a designer drug or new psychoactive substance (NPS).

Little is known about designer drugs and NPS. Often, little or no research has been conducted on them. Consequently, there is also limited knowledge about 3-MMC. However, it is clear that 3-MMC causes strong cravings and that the risk of addiction is likely greater than with other drugs.

3-MMC is a new drug and closely resembles 4-MMC (Mephedrone). Both belong to the same group: the synthetic cathinones. However, this does not mean that the effects and risks are the same. In 2012, 4-MMC was banned and 3-MMC was sold as a replacement. 3-MMC has also been banned since October 28, 2021.

How many people use 3-MMC in the Netherlands?

In 2023, 2.1% of the Dutch population had experience with the use of 3-MMC, according to data from the National Drug Monitor. That is approximately 300,000 people. More than half of them had used the substance in the past year.

Research points to a clear increase in the use of 3-MMC among clubgoers. This is evident from the Great Nightlife Survey. In 2023, 33.7% of the surveyed clubgoers indicated that they had used 3-MMC at least once in the past year.

In addition, there are indications that poisonings (overdoses) occur more frequently. This is evident from figures from the NVIC (2020) and the Drug Incident Monitor (2022). This is likely because the substance is used more often. It is not known whether the risk of poisoning is greater than with other substances.

Effects and workings of 3-MMC

3-MMC belongs to the group of stimulants. This means that someone who has used 3-MMC feels energetic. The effects can resemble a combination of the effects of MDMA and cocaine. Users feel alert, happy (euphoric feeling), and not fatigued. They often feel the need to connect with others. They also experience increased self-confidence and sometimes increased sexual desire.

The duration of action of 3-MMC is between 2 and 4 hours when snorted. If someone takes 3-MMC in the form of a pill, capsule, or ‘bomb’, the effect lasts 4 to 6 hours.

Risks of 3-MMC

No research has yet been conducted into the risks of 3-MMC in humans. However, it is clear that high doses and combined use with other drugs or alcohol increase the risks and negative effects. Users of this substance are therefore their own guinea pigs. A very large proportion of people who go out believe that regular use of 3-MMC is very harmful, as shown by the Great Nightlife Survey 2023.
